Short answer: A vending machine in the UAE can make anything from a few hundred dirhams to several thousand dirhams of net profit a month. The number depends far more on how many people buy each day than on the machine itself. A machine selling 15 items a day barely covers its costs; the same machine selling 80–90 items a day can pay for itself in a few months.

  • Net profit = sales − product cost − location commission − running costs.
  • Daily sales volume is the lever that matters most. Choose the location before the machine.
  • Product cost is usually the biggest expense — around half of the selling price for snacks and cold drinks.
  • Use the profit calculator with your own numbers before you buy.

The profit formula

Every vending machine, in any location, follows the same simple sum:

Monthly net profit = (sales per day × average price × 30) − product cost − location commission − other monthly costs

  • Sales per day — the number of items or cups sold. This is driven by how many people pass the machine and how long they stay on site.
  • Average price — in the UAE most snacks and cold drinks sell for a few dirhams each; coffee and fresh items sell for more.
  • Product cost — what you pay your wholesaler. For packaged snacks and drinks it is often about 50–60% of the selling price; hot drinks made from ingredients usually cost less per cup.
  • Location commission — the share of sales or fixed rent you pay the site owner, if any.
  • Other monthly costs — fuel and time for refill visits, card-payment fees, mobile data for the reader, cleaning supplies, repairs and your licence spread over the year.

Three worked examples

These are illustrations, not promises. They use round numbers so you can see how the result changes with volume. Replace them with your own figures in the calculator.

Per month Quiet site Good site Busy site
Sales per day 15 40 90
Average price AED 4.00 AED 4.50 AED 5.00
Monthly sales AED 1,800 AED 5,400 AED 13,500
Product cost (55%) AED 990 AED 2,970 AED 7,425
Location commission AED 180 (10%) AED 540 (10%) AED 2,025 (15%)
Other costs AED 250 AED 350 AED 600
Net profit ≈ AED 380 ≈ AED 1,540 ≈ AED 3,450

The lesson is in the first row. Going from 15 to 40 sales a day multiplies profit by four, because the fixed costs of visiting and maintaining the machine barely change.

What moves the number most

  1. Location. A captive audience — staff on shift, residents of a staff accommodation block, patients waiting — beats passing footfall. See our guide to the best vending locations in Dubai.
  2. Uptime. An empty or broken machine earns nothing. Refill before products run out and fix faults fast.
  3. Product mix. Track what sells and replace slow items every month. Two or three bestsellers usually make most of the sales.
  4. Cashless payment. Many people in the UAE no longer carry coins. A card and mobile-wallet reader stops you losing those sales. Read more about cashless vending.
  5. Price. A small increase on a product that still sells goes almost entirely to profit.

Costs people forget

  • Your time and fuel for refill visits — the reason operators group machines close together.
  • Expired stock in slow machines, especially chilled and fresh items.
  • Card-payment fees and the reader’s monthly data plan.
  • Repairs and spare parts once the warranty ends — or a maintenance contract that makes this cost predictable.
  • Licence, permits and insurance, which are paid yearly but belong in every month’s sum.
  • VAT on your sales and purchases if your business is registered.

Electricity is normally paid by the site, which is one reason site owners ask for a commission.

How long until the machine pays for itself?

Payback (months) = machine price ÷ monthly net profit.

Machines on our website currently cost from AED 3,000 to AED 15,000. Take a machine at AED 6,500: at the “good site” profit of about AED 1,540 a month it pays back in a little over four months; at the “quiet site” it would take around seventeen months. That gap is why we always ask about the location first.

If you want to protect your cash while you test a location, lease the machine monthly or start with a certified refurbished machine. If the location is yours and you would rather not run a machine at all, ask about operated vending.

Before you buy: a five-minute check

  1. Count the people on site per day and per shift — ask HR or the building manager for real numbers.
  2. Check what they can already buy within a two-minute walk.
  3. Agree the commission and who pays for electricity, in writing.
  4. Put those numbers in the profit calculator.
  5. Send us the result on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly whether the machine fits the site.

Frequently asked questions

Is a vending machine business profitable in Dubai?

It can be, at locations with enough daily buyers. Profit depends on sales volume, product margins, commission and how reliably the machine is stocked and working. A quiet location can lose money even with a good machine.

How many sales a day does a machine need?

As a rule of thumb, below about 15–20 sales a day a snack or drinks machine struggles to cover its costs. From roughly 30–40 sales a day it becomes worthwhile for an owner-operator.

What commission do locations ask for?

It varies. Some sites ask for nothing because the machine is a service for their staff; others ask for a percentage of sales or a fixed monthly rent. Agree it in writing before you install.

Which makes more money: snacks or coffee?

Coffee usually has a higher margin per cup because ingredients cost less than packaged products, but it needs cleaning and more technical care. Snacks and cold drinks are simpler to run. Many sites do best with both.
