How to start a vending machine business in the UAE

Quick answer

In short

To start a vending business in the UAE you need (1) a trade licence that covers vending activity, (2) approved locations with the owner's permission and any municipality and food-safety approvals, (3) the right machines for those locations, and (4) a routine for refilling, cleaning and repairs. Profit depends far more on the location's daily users than on the machine. Many operators start with one or two machines, learn the numbers, then grow.

1. Choose your vending model

Decide what you will sell and to whom before buying anything. The main options in the UAE are:

  • Snacks and cold drinks — the most common starting point; works in offices, factories, staff accommodation and public areas.
  • Coffee and hot drinks — higher ticket and margin per cup, but needs water, cleaning and more technical care.
  • Specialist vending — accessories, personal care or other higher-margin items for malls and transit locations.
  • Change machines — for car washes, laundries and arcades.

Also decide whether you will buy machines, lease-to-own them to protect cash flow, or start with refurbished machines to reduce the upfront cost.

2. Get licensed

In Dubai, vending businesses are typically licensed by the Department of Economy and Tourism under an activity for selling products by automatic vending machines, either on the mainland or through a free zone. The usual steps are:

  1. Choose mainland or free zone and reserve a trade name.
  2. Apply for initial approval and the trade licence with the vending activity.
  3. Get a no-objection certificate (NOC) from each property owner where a machine will stand.
  4. For food and drinks, obtain the required food-safety approvals from the municipality.
  5. Get any location permits required for machines in public or commercial areas.

Other emirates have their own economic departments and food-safety authorities, so requirements and fees differ. Licence costs vary widely between mainland and free-zone options — get a current quote before you budget.

This is general guidance, not legal advice. Always confirm current requirements with the licensing authority or a registered business-setup consultant.

3. Find locations that sell

The location decides your profit. Visit each site at different times and look for:

  • Captive users — people who stay on site for hours (staff, shift workers, residents, patients' families).
  • Few alternatives — no cafeteria or shop within a short walk, or long shifts and night work.
  • Daily volume — count people, not "potential". A busy site with 150 regular users beats a mall corner with random passers-by.
  • Practicalities — shade or indoors, a power socket, safe access for refilling and the owner's written approval.

Location owners may ask for a fixed monthly fee or a commission on sales. Build that into your numbers before you sign.

4. Choose the right machines

Match the machine to the site, not the other way round. For the UAE, prioritise:

  • Cooling that copes with heat and a shaded, ventilated position.
  • Cashless payments — cards and mobile wallets are now expected; keep coins and notes for sites with cash users.
  • Capacity that matches your refill frequency.
  • Parts and service availability in the UAE — downtime kills profit.
  • Telemetry (remote stock and error alerts) if you plan to run several machines.

5. Budget: what to plan for

Cost itemWhat to know
Machine Machines on our site currently range from AED 3,000 to AED 15,000. Leasing spreads this cost monthly.
Trade licence Varies by mainland or free zone and by visas included — get a current quote.
Location approvals Owner NOC, and municipality / food-safety approvals where required.
First stock Enough products to fill the machine plus one refill.
Cashless reader Hardware plus per-transaction fees from the payment provider.
Location fee or commission Agreed with each site owner.
Transport & time Refill trips, fuel, parking and your own time.
Maintenance Warranty first, then a maintenance contract or call-out repairs.

6. A worked profit example

Illustrative numbers only — replace them with your site's real figures:

  • 25 sales a day × AED 4 average price × 30 days = AED 3,000 monthly sales
  • Product cost at 55% of sales = AED 1,650 → gross profit AED 1,350
  • Minus location commission, payment fees, transport and maintenance = your net profit

If the machine cost AED 8,000 and you keep AED 900 a month after all costs, payback is about 9 months. Try your own numbers in the profit calculator.

7. Run it like a business

  • Refill on a schedule based on sales, not on empty machines.
  • Clean every visit and check expiry dates — hygiene protects your location contract.
  • Track sales per product and swap slow sellers monthly.
  • Respond to faults fast; one week of downtime can wipe out a month's profit.
  • Keep receipts and records for VAT and your licence renewal.

Questions about starting

Can I run vending machines as a side business in Dubai?

You still need a proper trade licence covering vending, even for one machine in a commercial location. Check whether your visa and employment allow you to hold a licence.

How much can one vending machine earn in the UAE?

It ranges from a loss at a poor location to a healthy monthly profit at a busy captive site. Estimate daily sales honestly, subtract product cost and location fees, and use the calculator.
